HELP US HELP OUR CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE | Part 2 of 3

Supporting Children in Overcoming Trauma

Children in our Treatment Foster Care program need more than typical children do. More patience, more attention, more understanding, more stability, more empathy.

Becoming a Treatment Foster Parent is a calling to our parents – it’s a deep desire to help a child, even when things aren’t going well. One of our mothers called our staff because she was struggling with how to help the child she was fostering. They spoke for a while, and the mom reflected on the training she took to become a Treatment Foster Parent. “You told me it wasn’t going to be easy, there would be good and bad days, that helping a child work through trauma is hard,” she said. They reminded her of what she had learned in training: consistent nurturing. She ended the call with renewed confidence in her abilities.

It takes a special person to commit to being a Treatment Foster Parent, to give of themselves so deeply to a child who is in emotional and psychological pain and is resistant to trusting.
