At Children’s Aid and Family Services, we believe that volunteers are the backbone of our agency. As an organization founded by volunteers in 1899, we embrace the philosophy that it takes a village to help improve the lives of vulnerable children, young adults, and families in our community. Whether you are an individual or part of a group of committed citizens, we would love to work with you!

Volunteer Opportunities

Recreational Volunteer for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
- Share your talents with the amazing men and women in our STRIVE day program. Opportunities include pet therapy, yoga/exercise, cooking/baking, martial arts, pottery, photography, sewing/ weaving and computers.
Baby Basics Volunteer
- Assist with bundling, distributing or hosting a supply drive (diapers, wipes and formula) for Baby Basics.
Office Assistant/Admin
- Act as a clerical volunteer doing tasks such as mailings, reference checks, and using Microsoft Offices; our administrative offices are located in Paramus, Fair Lawn, and South Orange.
Depot Sales Associate
- The Depot is the largest all women’s exchange in North America – volunteer to staff this gift/craft shop in Midland Park; requires one shift every two weeks.
Special Events Volunteer
- Help plan a special event or celebration for members of STRIVE, our day program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Examples include a Halloween Party, Holiday Party or Themed Event / Prom.
Other
- We encourage new ideas and are eager to work with you! Please specify your greatest area of interest.

Junior Volunteers

We believe it’s never too early to start giving back to your community. We have a number of ways volunteers under the age of 18 can make a difference.

Host a community drive with your friends, school or scout troop.

Baby Basics Supply Drive – Collect diapers and wipes to help keep babies happy, healthy and dry.
Back-to-School Drive – Gather backpacks, notebooks and other supplies to get our individuals ready for a great school year.
Toiletry Drives – Help provide the necessities we often take for granted, like soap, shampoo and toothpaste to the most vulnerable in our community.
Duffle Bags/Luggage – Provide our children in therapeutic foster care and our young adults “aging out” of foster care with a way to carry their belongings as they move forward on their journey.

Holiday Goodie Bags – Create fun and festive treat bags for children in our therapeutic treatment homes for special occasions like Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Halloween.

Corporate Volunteer Opportunities

Children’s Aid and Family Services has various corporate involvement opportunities that can be tailored to any organization. We encourage companies to meet with our team and build an ongoing partnership, not only to further our cause, but also to benefit your workplace by implementing positive corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Employee Volunteering- Team Building projects

We offer a variety of on-site and off-site team building projects such as beautifying our community homes and conducting community drives. We also encourage new ideas for projects and are eager to work with you in order to bring your ideas to life. Group opportunities are available throughout the year.

Conducting Community Drives

Groups have the opportunity to host community drives with their colleagues and friends to collect essentials for the children, young adults and families we serve.

A team of volunteers can select, purchase and assemble items in care packages for the individuals and families in our care.

Welcome Packages for children or adults entering community residences and New Beginnings Care Packages for teens “aging out” of foster care or individuals in recovery support,provide not only essentials for a new start, but also serve as a reminder that we are with them every step of the way.
