(Paramus, NJ) July 30, 2015 – Turrell Child Care & Early Learning Center, a program of Children’s Aid and Family Services, recently received a $13,000 grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities New York Tri-State Area to purchase two SMART Tables. The multi-touch, collaborative learning center for children allows two to eight students to use the table by touching objects on its surface. Its content is comprised of age-appropriate lessons and other applications, including phonics, math and reading.
The benefits of developmentally appropriate interactive technology in early childhood classrooms have been well documented by researchers. Specifically, the use of interactive technology in early childhood classrooms can encourage the social and cognitive growth of young children and facilitate emergent literacy in multiple arenas, including reading, writing and digital literacy, which has become increasingly important in the 21st century.
“The teachers are using the SMART Tables as an instructional tool to support the teaching of emergent literacy, particularly digital literacy, and to ensure that all of our children are able to enter elementary school on track for success,” says Robyn Knapp, Director of Child Care Services for the Turrell Center. “We are grateful to Ronald McDonald House Charities for helping us promote digital literacy, which is a crucial skill among our children.”
The Turrell Center serves children ages 8 weeks through kindergarten and provides scholarship assistance to nearly half of the families whose children attend.
