The Depot Gift Store Celebrates 50 Years of Giving Back
(Paramus, NJ) October 29, 2015- The Depot Gift and Handcraft Store of Midland Park, an all-volunteer run store, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Since its establishment in the baggage room at Ridgewood Railroad Station, it has donated over $3 million in proceeds from its sales to Children’s Aid and Family Services, a non-profit human services agency serving northern New Jersey.
Children’s Aid and Family Services recently honored the women who have volunteered at The Depot at the Terrace at Biagio’s in Paramus, NJ. “We are beyond grateful to the volunteers of The Depot,” says Jerry Binney, President & CEO. “Over the years, their efforts have provided us with the financial support that has enabled us to successfully change thousands of lives. Running a successful store for five decades is an amazing accomplishment, especially in a busy retail environment such as Bergen County. The Depot’s long success is because of the strong commitment of its volunteers.”
More than 120 former and current volunteers attended the event, some of whom traveled across several states to mark the occasion. Midland Park Mayor Bud O’Hagan presented a proclamation at the event, and Glen Rock resident Helen Barrand was honored for her 47 years of service to The Depot.
The Depot has also empowered countless women while serving as a member of the Federation of Woman’s Exchanges. The Federation is comprised of 20 Exchanges in 12 states that help women achieve economic stability through consignment and sale of high quality handcraft items.
About The Depot
The Depot was established by just a few volunteers in 1965 in the baggage room of the Ridgewood Railroad Station for the purpose of raising funds to benefit Family Counseling Service in Ridgewood, a member of the Children's Aid and Family Services family. After expanding three times, The Depot, in 1980, moved to its present location, a seven-room house in Midland Park. The Depot has grown into the largest all-volunteer woman's exchange in the country.
